Receiving the unexpected news that your child has Type 1 Diabetes is one of the scariest things that a family can go through. Sending your camper to overnight camp for an extended period away from home, for the first time after a recent diagnosis, can be equally as scary.
However, a positive camp experience during the first year of diagnosis is essential and provides a framework for support for both the camper and family that will carry through for the rest of their lives.
In just one year, a child with Type 1 Diabetes will check their blood sugar approximately 2,920 times, give 2,555 insulin injections, and lose 209 hours of sleep. There are many reasons a child with T1D experiences anxiety and burnout; from constant self-care, to making a million decisions on a daily basis, to feeling the loneliness of being part of the 0.2% of youth living with T1D.
Camp Ho Mita Koda is proud to sponsor first-time campers who have had a T1D diagnosis within 12 months of the start of the camp with a FREE WEEK OF CAMP!
CHMK is providing the opportunity to attend camp, regardless of finances, as we believe in the power of camp and have seen the incredible benefits that a one-week experience has on the mental health of a newly diagnosed camper.
Spread the word to your communities, friends, support groups, and more. We are here for you, no questions asked.
