Leader-In-Training Program

Camp Ho Mita Koda offers a Leader in Training (LIT) program, available campers ages 15-17 years old and entering their sophomore year of high school. The program emphasizes leadership skills, creativity, team building and most importantly fun! By acting as role models for younger campers and assisting in leading aspects of the camp program, it is our goal that our LIT’s walk away having learned new leadership skills, having formed lasting memories with our youngest campers.  The LIT program has a limited capacity of 5 campers per session.

Training Program

The LIT’s take part in a special training program, similar to our own staff training, to help them better understand the importance of a counselor’s responsibilities. Alongside the training aspect of the program, LIT’s will improve their leadership and creativity, being tasked with the planning and executing of their very own activity to teach at camp, and hands-on in-cabin experience with younger campers. Once a camper has completed our LIT program, and are 17 years old, they are eligible to return to camp in a paid role assisting in Facilities, Waterfront, or Dining Services.

It’s not all work

A familiar LIT stereotype is one of a “gopher” mentality or doing the little things and tasks no one else likes to do. The Camp Ho Mita Koda LIT experience is much different.

We like to think that LITs are potential counselors looking for an opportunity to learn and develop into our future leaders. We recognize LITs have leadership skills, and abilities which help make camp a phenomenal place. LITs have opportunities to teach and learn about activities, to plan and to implement programs, and to develop and use skills vital not only to camp, but to the world outside of camp.

LITs learn about…

  • How camp is run on a daily basis
  • How camp is run in terms of special events (trip day, all-camps, etc.)
  • What skillset is needed to work with kids (conflict resolution, management, etc.)
  • How to communicate with counselors and activity leaders to improve results of programming
  • How the camp’s different personalities mesh together for a common cause
  • How to properly and safely lead specialized activity areas

These are only some of the topics you will experience at camp. You will find that the camp will blend teaching and experiential learning to give you the best possible chance to grow as a potential counselor and as a leader in and outside of camp.
